Abstract

This chapter examines the historical roots of family violence research and theory. Four major theoretical models and their specific theories are presented. Theories are explored within micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis and include: psychiatric/psychopathological models; and socio-psychological theories such as traumatic bonding theory, stress theory, social conflict theory, power theory, resource theory, exchange/social control theory, symbolic interactionist theory, socio-biological/evolutionary theory, and social learning theory. Socio-cultural models are examined including: patriarchal/feminist theory, culture of violence theory, political economy theory, and environmental stress/strain theory. Multidimensional models are also presented including general systems theory/global theory and ecological theory.
